Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis)

The soft and velvety marshmallow blooms are amazing! The satin leaves of Althaea officinalis are diuretic and expectorant. Althea shines in soothing irritated tissues and has been enjoyed medicinally for thousands of years supporting healing in various ailments including coughs, ulcers, skin irritation, and providing relief to acid reflux symptoms. An infusion of the roots generate a great amount of mucilage, offering soothing and moistening qualities to membranes of the respiratory, digestive and urinary tracts. A cold infusion enables the extraction of the mucilage best rather than your typical hot/solar infusion.

Most of the mallows are considered edible and marhsmallow has been enjoyed in drinks, desserts, cosmetics and was the original ingredient in the marshmallow treats you now see in grocery stores today. All parts of the plant are edible: leaves, flowers and roots. I adore adding the powdered root to herbal body powder concoctions I create as it tends to leave your skin super soft, reminiscent to it's velvety leaves.

Isn’t the flower just a darling little bloom?! I grew this beauty from seed. Always fun to see your baby plants grow!
